Bihpuria is a small town in Lakhimpur district of Assam state India. Bihpuria is main town for the Bihpuria tehsil. It comes under Tezpur Loksabha constituency. Bihpuria is very close to Arunachal Pradesh in fact the closest town in Arunachal Pradesh is Bandardewa ,a commercial town, At a distance of 15 kms. During Pre British period,this area was known as manufacturing and packaging hub of poison, used in arrow for hunting in foothills of Arunachal Pradesh. The buyers were the tribes of Arunachal Pradesh specially Nishi,Aadi and Dafala. The market was based on barter system and the sellers used to get tobacco, Aromatic rice/herbs,handicrafts etc. History says the name of this town BIHPURIA derived from the same i.e BIH (POISON) PURIA (PAUCH).
The khamti is a branch of the Tai race,their total population is only about five thousand. They are found in Bihpuria and Narayanpur area of North Lakhimpur sub division and sadia region. They are very progressive in the terms of art and culture, and knowledge. The Khamtis are followers of the Buddhist religion. Physically, the khamti people are similar to the Chinese. The women of this tribes are very beautiful. In the past they are said to have dressed like the Chinese, but with time they have adopted their dress to the Assamese testes. Like all the other tribal people the basic occupation of the khamti is agriculture. In the past they seem to have cultivated the opium plant on large scale. The women folk actively help in agricultural activity. Occasional hunting and fishing is also present.
